What is a DEXA Scan?
A test to determine if you have osteoporosis is the DEXA or DXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) test. It tests your bone density or strength of your bones. It is done on the spine and hip or your forearm. This can tell if your bones fracture easily. We make sure that our team of Board Certified Doctors have the information to take care of your health.
How is a DXA Scan Performed?
This requires X-rays and takes 10-20 min. The radiation exposure is low. You lie on an X-ray table, stay still as the scanner passes over you, and then you can return to your normal activities the same day. There are 2 X-ray beams that are high and low energy that are scanned over your body. The amount of X-rays that pass through the bone are measured by the machine. This depends upon the bone thickness. The difference in the two beams determines your bone density.
